We’re delighted to announce that Watford Grammar School for Boys student Paul Greally has won Music & Drama Education Expo’s composition competition!
His SATB setting of Ave Maria will receive its premiere on day one of the Expo, performed by Schola Cantorum, the liturgical choir of The Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School. Paul will also receive a copy of music notation software Dorico, kindly supplied by Steinberg, and his piece will be printed in the April edition of Music Teacher magazine.
The entries were judged by Alex Stevens, editor of Music Teacher, and Scott Price, director of music of the Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School and director of the Schola Cantorum.
Scott said ‘Paul has composed a very beautiful setting of the Ave Maria, treating the text with great sensitivity and sustaining a convincing and carefully judged harmonic language throughout. I am sure that the Schola will enjoy singing it and we look forward very much to giving the first performance at the Expo.’
15 year old Paul is a student at Watford Grammar School for Boys and Organ Scholar at Pinner Parish Church. He has three Grade 8 Distinctions (organ, piano and drums) and an organ Diploma (CertRCO).
He said, ‘I’m so delighted to win this competition and I’m really looking forward to hearing The Schola Cantorum singing Ave Maria.’
